It would be very sad if the school closes because of economic deficit after all of the work done by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother did to build up this institution.
The name of Holy Family Educational Center in Playa Prieta, Ecuador, traveled around the globe on April 16, 2016, when Sr. Clare and five aspirants to the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother died beneath the rubble in the earthquake. Run by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, the school was rebuilt thanks to several donors’ generosity and continues to carry out educational and pastoral activity today.
Nonetheless, some days ago, this educational unit found itself constrained to launch a help petition through the Home of the Mother’s Missionary Groups’ website. In the note, the Servant Sisters affirm: “Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the families of our students cannot pay enough of the tuition and pension to move our school forward.”
Holy Family Educational Center is located in a rural area. The majority of the families live on simple jobs that give them enough to get through the day. They do not have savings, and some do not have a bank account. Because of lockdown, many people are not working and have no income. What they had saved up to pay for tuition, books and school supplies has been spent on food during these weeks. The school has nineteen contracted teachers and a janitor, and although some of the families have paid part of the tuition fee and pension and the teachers have offered part of their salary to collaborate in the monthly expenses, it is not enough to make the school get by. If the school does not manage to find the economic support, the government will force it to close. The sisters explain, “There are several private schools in the area that have already closed because of these circumstances.”
It would be very sad if the school closes because of economic deficit after all of the work done by the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother did to build up this institution. The Sisters’ sole desire is to give these poor children and youth a solid education and an experience of God that may sustain their faith for the rest of their lives. The Missionary Groups of the Home of the Mother calculated the necessary monthly costs to keep Holy Family Educational Center open. You can see the stats here.
They have also made this brief video which explains the problem and has interviews of students, parents and teachers.
