Carol Toner from Downpatrick is already on her way to Santiago de Compostela in memory of Sister Clare. She decided to begin the Camino pilgrimage as a part of a fundraising initiative for the Holy Family Educational Center, where Sister Clare and five young women in formation to become Servant Sisters passed away under the rubble after a terrible earthquake in Ecuador. Carol Toner was so moved by Sister Clare’s story that she decided she could not remain indifferent.
“Irish Catholic,” the most widely distributed Catholic newspaper in Ireland, published an article by Mags Gargan about this initiative on April 20, 2017: http://www.irishcatholic.ie/article/fundraiser-rebuild-sr-clare%E2%80%99s-school
In the article, Carol Toner explains, “I knew I wanted to do something in her memory and of the children who died. Any donation will help towards getting the school rebuilt in order provide an education for the children of Playa Prieta and to help them overcome the trauma they experienced in 2016.”
