Mayra was a girl who truly gave of herself. She had a great love for Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother. I met Mayra in Playa Prieta, in the last summer camp. She was my group leader and I thank the Lord for how much she helped me to live well that experience. I have to admit that I really had not lived the camp experience well the year before. One memory that comes to mind was in the dining hall, when we would sit down for meals and begin to talk and write songs together. One of the songs we wrote with Mayra was dedicated to Our Lady, “The One with the blue cape.” Mayra really loved that song and we always sang it at lunchtime. At the end of each day, we talked as a group about how our day had gone, and we always ended up laughing. I remember one day when she told us her vocation story- we stopped eating to listen to her. Every time I remember it, it always helps me. We lived lots of experiences together.
Her love and her dedication for each soul was really impressive. Mayra was in love with her vocation. I used to ask myself why the Sisters and the candidates were always so happy, and sharing those days of summer camp with Mayra is what made me discover the answer: They are happy because they have the Lord in their lives. Every time I saw Mayra, I always thought, “What a brave girl.” I will never forget when she told me, “If you open your heart and let the Lord in your life, and surrender yourself to Him, you will always be happy.”
