Sr. Clare's writing

There are many people who love God and die in His friendship but are not ready to go straight to Heaven. First they go to purgatory to be cleansed from venial sin. The souls in purgatory suffer because they miss God, but their suffering is mixed with joy because they know that they will see Him soon. We can help the souls in purgatory to reach Heaven faster by offering our Masses, prayers and sacrifices for them. Lucy gives an example of a sacrifice that she can make for them.

A short time ago, we found the scripts that Sr. Clare prepared for the recording of the “Hi Lucy” television programs that she recorded with Sr. Grace Silao for HM Television and EWTN. We would like to share the script for one of the programs on the Communion of Saints, along with the drawing she prepared for Sr. Grace to have on her desk.  She also always prepared a series of papers with the script in colors and big writing to help Sr. Grace to follow the script as they recorded.

Lucy likes a drawing that Sr. Grace has on her desk.

Sr. Grace tells her that she used it today to explain the Communion of Saints. Lucy thinks that Sr. Grace is talking about when the Saints make their First Holy Communion. Sr. Grace explains to her what she means by Communion of Saints.

In the Apostles creed we say, "I believe in the Communion of Saints."

The saints in Heaven, the souls in purgatory and the members of the Church here on earth make up God's family. We call our one great family the Communion of Saints.

Lucy understands the part about the saints in Heaven and that we are members of the Church here on earth, but what happens to the souls in purgatory?

Sr. Grace explains that nothing that is not totally clean can enter into Heaven. Our soul must be clean, without any stain of sin. Sr. Grace uses her habit to show Lucy that if she had a stain on it (the habit symbolizes the soul for this example) then she has wash it. In purgatory we "wash," we clean, our soul. There are many people who love God and die in His friendship but are not ready to go straight to Heaven. First they go to purgatory to be cleansed from venial sin. The souls in purgatory suffer because they miss God, but their suffering is mixed with joy because they know that they will see Him soon. They look at the drawing.

Communion of Saints scriptSr. Grace: "See how we can all help each other to get to Heaven!"

The souls in Heaven pray for us and help us with their prayers. The souls in Heaven and earth pray for the souls in Purgatory so that they can go to Heaven faster. The souls on earth can pray for one another (St. Monica for St. Augustine). The souls in Heaven do not need our prayers, but they pray with us and for us to help us to get to Heaven where we will be with them forever.

Lucy: So, is there always someone praying for me?

Sr. Grace: Yes, at this moment there is someone praying for you.

Lucy asks Sr. Grace if she knew that the Basketball Club had a game tomorrow night. Sr. Grace tells Lucy that she must not forget that she is a member of a very special club that's called the Communion of Saints. It's not just any old club; it has a lot of very special people that form part of it: Padre Pio, John Paul II, etc . These people are great friends of God and they want to be our friends too. St Bernard says, "The saints want us to be with them, and we are indifferent... let us long for those who long for us." They love helping us, all we have to do is ask.

* The prayers of one affect all.
* We are not alone.
* When we do something good, it benefits the whole church. The same thing happens when we do something bad.
