One day Sr. Clare quoted St. Teresa of Avila, saying, “Cuando perdiz, perdiz” (When I eat partridge, I eat partridge!). I was learning Spanish at the time, but that sentence did not make any sense to me. She cracked up laughing – as usual – when she saw the “What are you talking about?” expression on my face. She explained what she meant: “When it is time to pray, we have to pray with all our heart and soul. When it is time to work, we have to use all our energy in what we are doing. And when it is time to celebrate, we have to celebrate with joy.”
Thinking back on it, it is true. When Sr. Clare prayed, you could see that she was concentrated. However, when she laughed, she would crack up. When she taught something, she was not satisfied until the other person had understood the truth that she was trying to transmit. When she would sing, even if you didn’t look at her, you knew that she elevated her whole being to the Lord. It is as if she would lose herself in God. Her song would also invite those who heard her to do the same.
