Nativity Play

christmas play

This Nativity Play was written by Sr. Clare in 2007 for the first graders to perform at Assumption Catholic School in Jacksonville, Florida. Ever since Sr. Clare wrote this play the first graders have been putting it on every year at Christmas time, trying to remind everyone of the true meaning of Christmas.

This Christmas, let us try to keep a clean heart so that Jesus can be born there, too. We ask Him now and always to be the center of our lives.

Narrator
A long time ago in a town called Nazareth there lived a young woman named Mary and a young man named Joseph.

They loved each other very much and they also loved God very much. Mary was very special because God had chosen her to be the mother of His only Son. God sent the Angel Gabriel to ask Mary if she would be the Mother of God.

Angel 1
Mary, you are the chosen one. Soon you will have a baby boy. He will be very special. He will be the Son of God and you must call him Jesus.

Narrator
Soon after the angel’s visit, Herod, the ruler of the land, sent a message with an order.

Messenger
By order of the emperor, everyone must return to the place they were born to pay a special tax.

Narrator
Joseph was worried. He was born in a place called Bethlehem. It was a long trip and Mary’s baby was due any time. Joseph and Mary know they had to go and they went off and prepared for their journey.

FIRST SONG: O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM

christmas play1peq

Narrator
Mary rode to Bethlehem on a donkey with Joseph walking by her side. Remember, Mary was about to have a baby, so it was a very long and dangerous journey. Mary and Joseph were grateful to their faithful donkey who carried her so bravely and carefully.

Mary
Thank you little donkey.

Donkey
You’re welcome

Narrator
It took many days to reach Bethlehem. When they arrived Mary was very tired. They had to find somewhere to stay, but the town was crowded with lots of other travelers and every inn they went to was full.

Joseph
Let’s go and see if they have any room for us.

Joseph
Do you have any room for us?

Inn Keeper 1
I’m sorry, I have family in town. No room here.

Joseph
Do you have any room for us?

Inn Keeper 2
We have been busy, busy, busy, and I have a full house. There’s no room here.

Joseph
Do you have any room for us?

Inn Keeper 3
Sorry, my mother is visiting. I do not have room for you.

Narrator
Eventually seeing how tired they both looked, one inn keeper had pity on them.

Inn Keeper 4
I have no room at the inn, but you can stay in the stable where I keep my animals. It’s dry and warm.

Narrator
During the night Mary gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped Him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger.

Cow
Let’s m-o-o-o-o-ve a little closer to the baby.

Sheep
We might wake the b-a-a-a-a-a-by up

Donkey
No, he haw, he haw, he’s already awake!

Narrator
Nearby on a hillside, some shepherds were watching over their sheep. As they did so, a very bright light came shining into the sky. The light was angels sent by God.

Angel 2
Do not be afraid, we have good news.

Angel 3
The Son of God has been born.

Angel 4
You will find him in a manger in Bethlehem.

SECOND SONG: RISE UP SHEPHERD AND FOLLOW

christmas play2peqNarrator
The shepherds were excited and went to Bethlehem to find Jesus. When they found Jesus, they were filled with joy. They told Mary and Joseph about the angels in the sky.

Shepherd 1
This must be the Son of God!

Shepherd 2
The angel told us He will be the Savior of the world.

Shepherd 3
May I kiss his feet?

Shepherd 4
Thank you God for giving us your Son.

Narrator
In the East, three wise men studied the stars and saw a new, very bright start shining in the sky. They knew that this meant a great ruler had been born.

Narrator
The three wise men decided to go find the Baby. Thinking that the Baby King would be in a palace, they went to see King Herod.

Wise men
We have come to see the new King of the Jews.

Herod
(He must be very serious.) New king? You tell me there’s a new king? What do you mean? This is terrible news! I am the king! There is no new king here. (Kinder) Please go and find Him, and then return to tell me where He is so that I may also honor and bring Him gifts.

Narrator
Although Herod had told the wise men he wanted to take gifts to the Newborn King, he was really angry. He thought this new King might take away his throne. At night he had bad dreams. He was so worried and jealous about the arrival of the new King. The wise men followed the star to the stable in Bethlehem. They found Jesus lying in a manger and brought Him gifts.

THIRD SONG: WE THREE KINGS

Wise man 1
I give you this gift of gold.

Wise man 2
I give you this gift of frankincense.

Wise man 3
I give you this gift of myrrh.

Narrator
All through the night, many people came to visit the Baby Jesus, even first graders visited the Baby with small gifts and presents.

FOURTH SONG: O COME LITTLE CHILDREN

Child 1
I give you my ball, Baby Jesus, so that you can play soccer with your Dad when you’re older.

Child 2
I bring you these markers, Baby Jesus, so that you can draw pictures for your mom.

Child 3
I bring you these cookies. They’re my favorite!

Child 4
I bring you my favorite book that I love to read.

Child 5
This hear represents my love for you!

Narrator
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, let us not forget what Christmas is all about. Let us not forget that it is Jesus’ birthday. This Christmas, let us try to keep a clean heart so that Jesus can be born there, too. We ask Him now and always to be the center of our lives.
